 Martinez Lake Resort

  November 7, 2004

 

 The Colorado River is flowing at  4000 cfs with low visibility  due to recent rains.    There are many sandbars that are hard to see.. The water temperature  is down to  60 in the lakes and a few degrees cooler in the river.

The weather has been in the   70’s in the daytime and  60’s at night.  

Bass fishing has been  very good with many limits of smaller fish. Most bass are caught on crankbait or shiners.  Many undersized have been caught and turned back in. Bluegil fishing has excellent and catfishing good. Most unusual has been the large number of small mouth bass caught in the river, up to 2 pounds. Many are caught near sandbars along with carp and channel cats. Stripper action has been very slow.

Recent Catches:

Steve Castle, Martinez Lake Fishing Guide has caught as many as 12 bass in an hour, with most undersized with few over 3.5 pounds. He has been using   crankbait in Martinez Lake.

The Colorado River is flowing at 6,600 cfs with low visibility  due to recent rains. As the water flow lessens,       more sand bars will appear. The water temperature  is  66 in the lakes and a few degrees cooler in the river. The weather has been in the   70’s in the daytime and  60’s at night.  

Bass fishing has been spotty with occasional limits of bass up to 3.5 pounds. Most bass are caught on crankbait or shiners.  Many undersized have been caught and turned back in. Bluegil fishing has excellent and catfishing good. Most unusual has been the large number of small mouth bass caught in the river, up to 2 pounds. Many are caught near sandbars along with carp and channel cats. Stripper action has been very slow.

 The Colorado River is flowing at 8,600 cfs with a visibility of 6 to 8 feet. As the water flow lessens, more sand bars will appear. The water temperature  is  77 in the lakes and a few degrees cooler in the river. The weather has been in the  92-99 range in the daytime and 66 to 70 at night.  

Bass fishing has been spotty with occasional limits of bass up to 5 pounds   using shiners and crank bait. Bluegil fishing has excellent and catfishing good. Most unusual has been the large number of small mouth bass caught in the river, up to 2 pounds. Many are caught near sandbars along with carp and channel cats. Stripper action has been very slow.

The water temperature has fallen in one week from 89 degrees to 82 in the lakes and a few degrees cooler in the river. The weather has been cooler mostly in the high 90’s. in the daytime and 80’s at night.  

Bass fishing has been spotty with occasional limits of bass up to 5 pounds   using shiners and crank bait. Bluegil fishing has excellent and catfishing good. Most unusual has been the large number of small mouth bass caught in the river, up to 2 pounds. Many are caught near sandbars along with carp and channel cats.

The water temperature is 89 degrees  in the lakes and a few degrees cooler in the river. The weather has been warm ranging from 105 to 110 in the daytime and 80’s at night. Most fishing is being down early morning til the temperature hits 95 and then most fishermen come in until the evening time.

Bass fishing has been spotty with occasional limits of bass up to 5 pounds   using shiners and crank bait. Bluegil fishing has excellent and catfishing good. Most unusual has been the large number of small mouth bass caught in the river, up to 2 pounds. Many are caught near sandbars along with carp and channel cats.

Recent Catches:

 Greg Birkenfeld of Martinez Lake, caught a 20 pound flathead on a bluegill off of  the sandbar at the entrance to Martinez Lake as well as a stringer of 2 to 4 pound stripped bass.

 The Colorado River is flowing at 10,000 cfs with a visibility of 6 feet. As the water flow lessens, more sand bars will appear. The water temperature is 87 degrees  in the lakes and a few degrees cooler in the river. The weather has been warm ranging from 105 to 110 in the daytime and 80’s at night. Most fishing is being down early morning til the temperature hits 95 and then most fishermen come in until the evening time

Recent Catches:

David Ross of El Cajon, Ca caught a 7 and 19 pound flathead on bluegill in the river upstream from Martinez Lake.

Garret Russell 15, and James Pinterich 13, both from El Cajon, Ca caught a large string of pan size bluegill on red worms and night crawlers in Martinez Lake.

Darren Donais of Phoenix, Az caught a 10 pound flathead on a bluegill in Martinez Lake.

Most fishing is being down early morning til the temperature hits 95 and then most fishermen come in until the evening time.

Because of the heat, the fishing pressure has been light with few tournaments. The fishing has been spotty with occasional limits of bass up to 5 pounds   using shiners and crank bait. Bluegil fishing has excellent and catfishing good. Most unusual has been the large number of small mouth bass caught in the river, up to 2 pounds. Many are caught near sandbars along with carp and channel cats.

Recent Catches:

J.C.Playford of Ramona, Ca caught 3 flatheads, the largest over 20 pounds on bluegil close to Picacho.

Art and his son Anthony Zadavar of Ramona, Ca caught a variety of bigmouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegil,  small cats and carp up to 10 pounds off of river sandbars in the Lake Ferguson area using doughballs and nightcrawlers.

The weather has been warm ranging from 105 to 110 in the daytime and 80’s at night. Most fishing is being down early morning til the temperature hits 95 and then most fishermen come in til the evening time.

Because of the heat, the fishing pressure has been light with few tournaments. The fishing has been spotty with occasional limits of bass up to 5 pounds   using shiners and crank bait. Bluegil fishing has excellent and catfishing good.

Our river fishing guide Ken Goodwin has retired for health reasons and moved to Kanab, Utah. Our new guides are Jim Castle, our boat mechanic who will be guiding for flatheads and his son Steve Castle will be guiding the bass trips. Recent Catches:

 A 50+ pound flathead  was caught by a Yuma resident last week.

 Al  Specht, of El Cajon caught a 5 pound bass on a shiner in Martinez Lake off of the docks.

  MARCH 7, 2004

THE COLORADO RIVER IS FLOWING AT  6,600 CFS WITH SANDBARS CLEARLY EXPOSED WITH THE VISABILITY AT 5 TO 6 FEET. THE WATER HAS  WARMED UP TO 62 DEGREES AND THE DAYS ARE NOW IN THE HIGH 70's SUMMER IS ON ITS WAY.

THE FISHING HAS IMPROVED DRAMATICALLY WITH MOST FULL DAY FISHERMEN CATCHING A LIMIT. MOST BASS HAVE BEEN CAUGHT IN THE ENTRANCES AND LAKES ON NIGHTCRAWLERS, SHINERS OR CHANKBAIT. WEEKEND TOURNAMENTS HAVE DONE WELL.

BLUE GIL ARE IN SCHOOLS AND HITTING MEAL WORMS, STRIPERS ARE HITTING ANY MEAT OUT IN THE RIVER AND ENTRANCES TO THE LAKES AND THE CATFISH ARE HITTING CHICKEN LIVER, MOSTLY IN THE RIVER. FLAT HEAD FISHING HAS BEEN SLOW. BEST STRIPER FISHING HAS BEEN AT THE LAKE ENTRANCES BETWEEN SUNSET AND DARK.

THE COLORADO RIVER IS FLOWING AT  6,600 CFS WITH SANDBARS CLEARLY EXPOSED WITH THE VISABILITY AT 5 TO 6 FEET. THE WATER SHOULD BE UP BY THE END OF MARCH. THE WATER HAS  WARMED UP TO 59.    THE WEATHER HAS BEEN COOL, BUT STARTING TO WARM UP.

 THE FISHING HAS PICKED UP SINCE THE WATER HAS PASSED THE MAGIC MARK OF 58 DEGREES. SOME BIGGER BASS ARE BEING CAUGHT ESPECIALLY ON LIVE NIGHT CRAWLERS IN THE SIDE LAKES AND CANALS. THE STRIPERS ARE BITING ON CRANK BAIT AT THE LAKE ENTRANCES AS WELL AS SHINERS. MOST STRIPERS ARE LESS THAN 5 POUNDS

BLUE GIL ARE IN SCHOOLS AND HITTING MEAL WORMS AND THE CATFISH ARE HITTING CHICKEN LIVER, MOSTLY IN THE RIVER. FLAT HEAD FISHING HAS BEEN SLOW.

JESSE GORDON OF YUMA CAUGHT A 5 POUND BIGMOUTH ON A NIGHT CRAWLER IN MARTINEZ LAKE.

ART ZOLDAVAR OF RAMONA, CA CAUGHT A 7.5 POUND BIGMOUTH ON A NIGHT CRAWLER IN THE LAKE BELOW FACE LAKE (ARIZONA SIDE).

THE COLORADO RIVER IS FLOWING AT  6,600 CFS WITH SANDBARS CLEARLY EXPOSED WITH THE VISABILITY AT 5 TO 6 FEET. THE WATER  IS 56 DEGREES.    THE WEATHER HAS BEEN COOL, BUT STARTING TO WARM UP.

THE FISHING HAS BEEN GOOD FOR THE FEW FISHERMEN  TRYING THEIR LUCK. BASS ARE STILL BITING IN THE DEEP HOLES IN THE LAKES AS WELL AS THE SHORELINE ALONG THE RIVER AND THE LAKE ENTRANCES. BEST BAIT IS   CRANKBAIT,  AND  SHINERS.

FRED BOOK OF THE ISLAND EMPIRE BASSMASTERS CAUGHT A 9 POUND 11 OZ BIGMOUTH BASS IN LAKE FERGUSION TO WIN THEIR TWO DAY TOURNAMENT. THE WINNING STRINGER WEIGHTED 16 POUNDS WITH 28 OF THE 30 FISHERMENT CATCHING FISH.

The Colorado River is flowing at 6,600cfs with many sandbars showing but scheduled to rise to 8000 cfs by mid February. The water temperature in the river  and the lakes is 54 degrees. The visability is 5  feet. The weather has been  fair with light winds. Temperatures are ranging between   65 to 75 during the day and   45 to 55 at night.

 The water level is at its lowest  but is rising and should be a foot higher by the end of the month . The days are getting longer.


 The flathead bite has been  fair with some   10+ pounders all caught on goldfish or bluegil in the river at night.

The bluegil fishing is  hot in the river and lakes using meal worms but you must first find the school.

Stripers are  being  caught at the entrance to Martinez Lake using nightcrawlers and crankbait. Most fish are 2-3 pounds but some are up to 7-8 pounds.

Blue and channel catfish are plentiful using stinkbait, worms, cut mackerel or any other meat. They are easily caught in the lakes and river. If you don’t have a bite in 20 minutes, move on.

Bigmouth bass are now in the river edges and deeper holes in the lakes and caught on live shiners, nightcrawlers, spinners, plastic worms or crankbait.  Best time to fish is dawn or dusk.  Fishing has been picking up.

 The crappie are biting but you must first find the school and use crappie shiners or small jigs. Many of the crappie are up to 2 pounds.
 
The fishing pressure has been low due to holidays, cold weather and cold water. February fishing usually picks up as the water warms up.

Recent catches:

Michael McBride of Martinez Lake caught 3 bass ranging from 3 to 5.5 pounds using crankbait off the shoreline last week.
A recent tornament was won with three bass totaling 9.5 pounds.
