Weekly Fishing Report
 Martinez Lake Resort
 Dec. 14, 2003

The Colorado River is flowing at 4,600cfs with many sandbars showing. The water temperature in the river  and the lakes is 55 degrees. The visability is 5  feet. The weather has been sunny with light winds. Temperatures are ranging between  65 to 70 during the day and  45 to 50 at night.

Winter is close.  The water is cooling off quickly and the aquatic growth is dying leaving very clear water.

 The flathead bite has been  fair with some   10+ pounders all caught on goldfish or bluegil in the river at night.

The bluegil fishing is very hot in the river and lakes using meal worms.

Stripers are  being  caught at the entrance to Martinez Lake using nightcrawlers and crankbait. Most fish are 2-3 pounds but some are up to 7-8 pounds.

Blue and channel catfish are plentiful using stinkbait, worms, cut mackerel or any other meat. They are easily caught in the lakes and river. If you don’t have a bite in 20 minutes, move on.

Bigmouth bass are now in the river edges and deeper holes in the lakes and caught on live shiners, nightcrawlers, spinners, plastic worms or crankbait.  Best time to fish is dawn or dusk. Most catches are 2 to 5 pounds with many undersize fish caught (less than 13”).  A recent tournamant was won by a 5 fish total of  15 pounds.

 The crappie are biting but you must first find the school and use crappie shiners or small jigs. Many of the crappie are up to 2 pounds.

BIG NEWS. The crappie have finally showed up. Large crappie (2 pounds or less) are being caught in the Picacho area on crappie shiners and jigs (white and yellow)

The fishing has slowed down in the last few days with very few limits being caught. Most fish are being caught in the river and around the docks in the lakes.

Recent Catches:

Larry, Dave and Desmond Ternes all of  El Centro and Torrance Ca. had a good day with Ken Goodwin, the Martinez Lake Fishing guide. They caught and released a total of 10 bigmouth bass  ranging from 2.5 to 5 pounds on  golden shiners in Lake Ferguson and the string of lakes just below Fisher’s Landing.

Dalton Morgan and Bill Heath of Fontana, Ca. caught a great stringer of crappie up to 2 pounds on shiners in the Picacho area as well as two 10 pound flatheads

Wes  Heintz of  Spring Valley, Ca caught 3.5 pound bigmouth bass on spinner bait in the river.

Matthew Leadley of Spring Valley, Ca caught a 3 pound small mouth in the river using cankbait.

The weather has been sunny with light winds. Temperatures are ranging between 70 and 75 during the day and  50 to 60 at night.

The visability is 5 to 8 feet. The weather has been sunny with light winds. Temperatures are ranging between 90  and 100 during the day and  70 to 80 at night.

Fall is  here. Our best month for fishing, boating and canoeing is October and here we are.

 The flathead bite has been  good with some   40+ pounders all caught on goldfish or bluegil in the river at night.

The bluegil fishing is very hot in the river and lakes using meal worms.

A local experienced fishermen limits out every evening on crank bait and surface lures catching many undersize fish and missing many top water hits.  Fishing around the docks from boats is very productive.

Recent Catches:

The Southland Bass Club had a two day tournament with Gregg Park winning with a total of 7 fish for 11.06 pounds. The most successful lures were rattle traps, pop-r’s and flukes. Bryan Moore had the biggest fish of 3.8 pounds.

The visability is 5 to 8 feet. The weather has been sunny with light winds. Temperatures are ranging between 95  and 100 during the day and  80 at night.

The weather has been sunny with light winds. Temperatures are ranging between 100 and 105 during the day and  80 at night. The mornings are perfect for fishing and the afternoons great for swimming or napping.

Fall is almost here. The water temp has dropped from 91 to 84 degrees in 25 days, the river flow has dropped from 14,000 cfs to 8,400 cfs in 60 days. Daytime temps rarely reach 105 and before you know it we will be wearing sweaters in the morning. Our best month for fishing, boating and canoeing is October and here we are.

The fishing pressure  is light with very few tournaments. For those experienced fishermen, the best time to fish is predawn to 11 am and 6 pm to dusk.

Sal Casalnuovo of San Diego caught a 4 pound largemouth bass while tubing in Martinez Lake on crank bait.

Nick Verzella, age 7 from Encinitas, Ca caught 8 bass off of the docks using nightcrawlers. Nick threw all fish back so “the fish could go on swimming”.

The Colorado River is flowing at 10,250cfs with many sandbars showing. The water temperature in the river  and the lakes are in the low 90‘s. The weather has been sunny with light winds ranging between 100 and 110during the day and  85 at night. The mornings are perfect for fishing and the afternoons great for swimming or napping.

The fishing pressure has dropped off with the higher heat with very few tournaments. For those experienced fishermen, the best time to fish is predawn to 11 am and 6 pm to dusk.

The flathead bite has been  good with some   40+ pounders all caught on goldfish or bluegil in the river at night.

The bluegil fishing is very hot in the river and lakes using meal worms.

Stripers are  being  caught at the entrance to Martinez Lake using nightcrawlers.

 Art Miller of Martinez Lake caught at 16 pound flathead on goldfish below Picacho.

One of  our most avid fishermen caught a stringer of 6 bass totaling 23 pounds on crankbait in an area of cooler water (88 degrees) upstream from Martinez Lake.

Again this week, Dalton Morgan junior and senior from Laverne, Ca,teamed up to catch 4 flatheads ranging from 6 to 12 pounds. The fish were caught on bluegill in the Picacho Area of the river. Last week they caught a 12 and 45 pounder

Two flatheads between 10 1n 15 pounds were caught this week on bluegil by Pichacho

Very large stringers of bluegil are being caught in the river on meal worms.

A 6 pound bigmouth bass was caught on a meal worm in Island Lake while fishing for bluegil.

WEEKLY FISHING REPORT
APRIL 18, 2003

The Colorado River is flowing at 12500 cfs.  The temp in the back water is 78 degrees, the river
is73 degrees.  A few sand bars are showing.  Visability is 6 feet. The  temp has been 100
degrees in the daytime and 65 at night.

Bass are coming in on a steady pace with many limits.  A large bass of 8 pounds was seen this week  Blue gill and
crappie are hard to find Larry Chapman from El Cajon and his brother Dennis Chapman enjoyed catching limits of 2 to 3 pound large mouth bass  using jerkbaits. Most of their success were in upstream backwaters..

 FEBRUARY, 2003

The Colorado River is flowing at 7500 cfs with numerous sand bars just below the surface. The water temperature is 57 degrees and the visibility 5 to 6 feet. The weather is perfect for wintertime, high 70’s daytime and high 50’s evening.

According to Ken Goodwin, Martinez Lake Fishing Guide, the bigmouth bass bite is  good using crank bait and shiners in the lakes, docks and river openings. Crappie have been caught up to 2 pounds but the schools are very elusive-best bait crappie shiners. Stripers are being caught in the river up to 10 pounds on crank bait and shiners. Catfish and bluegill are scarce.

 Steve Castle of Santee, caught a 5.1 pound bigmouth on crankbait  in Lake Martinez

Two flatheads weighing 40 and 60 pounds were caught in the Ferguson area on bluegill two weeks ago by two California fishermen.

A stringer of 15 crappie was caught in Martinez Lake on crappie shiners.

A two pound crappie was caught on a large crank bait in Martinez Lake.
