Weekly Fishing Report
 November 4, 2002

The Colorado River flow  is  7,200cfs .. The visibility is 5 to 7 feet in the river and 8 to 10 feet in the lakes.  The water temperature is  68 degrees in the lakes,  with  a some sandbars  above the surface. The weather is  75 to 80 in  the daytime and the low  60’s at night.

Ken Goodwin, Martinez Lake Fishing Guide, tells us that the big mouth bass fishing is good in the river as well as lakes. The bass are being caught everywhere on   shiners, spinnerbait, crankbait and plastic worms. Early morning top water is working well. Night fishing has been good around the docks. Many bass are being found in backwaters in the aquatic growth just below the water surface.

The catfishing has fallen off  with  some flat heads being caught at night on bluegil and goldfish   Most flathead fishermen go out at sunset, spend the night on the river with two lines our per man, use bluegil or goldfish. The bite seems to happen after midnight.

Bluegill fishing is excellent with some going 1-1/4 pounds being caught on mealworms most any place in the river or lakes (after you find the school).

The  stripers has slowed down, biting on all types of meat, live shiners and Rapalas in the lake entrances and downstream from sand bars.  Stripers are hitting well after sunset and ranging from 2 to 4 pounds.

The dredging opening up the California Cut is near complete west of Coors Island. The openings of Fishers Lagoon and Martinez Lake is schedule to be done  the end of the year.

Recent catches:

A small tournament winner this weekend won with a 5 bass stringer totaling 12.7 pounds.

A few 5 pound bass have been caught on crankbait this week as well as some 5 to 7 pound stripers caught on Rapalas at twilight.

A 3.5 pound smallmouth was caught at the entrance to Martinez Lake on a crankbait.

The Colorado River flow  is  9,200cfs .. The visibility at 5 feet in the river and 8 to 10 feet in the lakes.  The water temperature is  86 degrees in the lakes,  with  a some sandbars  above the surface. The weather is  100 to 105  in the daytime and the low  70s at night.

Recent Catches:

Gary Goodwin of San Marcus, Ca caught a 5 pound bigmouth bass on a shinner in the channel leading to Race Lake below Fisher's Landing.

The first portion of the dredging has been completed and has opened up to the river just below the Haystack rock outcroping. The dredge is now working below Fishers.

Recent catches:

 Johnathan Pasco and Raymond Patridge of Santee, Ca caught a large stringer of bluegil on meal worms in their secret spot in Martinez Lake. Some of these fish were as large as 1-1/4 pounds.

Cory and Noah Gilmore of Santee, Ca caught a 6 pound channel cat on nightcrawlers in Martinez Lake.

Larry Sheldon of San Diego caught a limit of smaller bass, 2 to 3 pounds on crankbait in face lake and tells us that the blue gill are plentiful.

Shaiy and Shailla McNabb of ElCajon Ca, caught a limit of bass at Picacho on shinners, up to 6 pounds as well as a 3 pound channel cat in Lake Martinez.

Carl Limbrick Jr and Johnny Limbrick of San Diego caught 106 bluegill, 30 strippers, 5 bass and 9 cats in two days in the lakes and Dam areas using chicken livers, rattletraps and worms

The visibility at 5 feet in the river and 8 to 10 feet in the lakes.  The water temperature is holding at  87degrees in the lakes,  with  a some sandbars  above the surface..There are bound to be more sand bars showing by mid month. The weather is  105 to 113  in the daytime and the low  70s at night.

Recent Catches:

 Devek Niclos of Arkansas caught a 20 pound flathead and lost a whooper that hie 30# line. He was using goldfish below Picacho.

Art Soldivar and his son Anthony 14, caught a 6 and 8 pound flathead on bluegill at the entrance to Martinez Lake. They also gigged a few frogs at night in the California cut.

Jessica 10, Lexie 8, and Johann 4, Sheldon of  San Diego caught a stringer of bluegil on meal worms in Face Lake along with a small bass and catfish.

Most flathead fishermen go out at sunset, spend the night on the river with two lines our per man, use bluegil or goldfish. The bite seems to happen after midnight. The cat fish spawn in  over and the bite  has picked up in the last  few weeks. We have seen over 25 flatheads at the cleaning station in the last two weeks.

Ellis Rhodes of  San Diego, caught a 12 pound flathead on a goldfish below Pichacho.

A 15 pound flathead was caught in Face Lake on a  bluegil.

Occasional  crappie, including some slabs, have been biting in Martinez Lake, the Arizona Cut and Lake Ferguson. The schools move around and the trick is to find them.The best bait are crappie shiners, yellow and white and red and white jigs.

Dredging continues across the river from Fishers Landing  to clear our the old California Cut that was silted over by the flood of 1983. The first portion of the dredging has been completed and has opened up to the river just below the Haystack rock outcroping. The dredge is now working below Fishers.

Recent Catches:

 Bill Kreoger and Butch Warnburg, both of San Diego caught 6 flathead catfish up to 12 pounds and gigged 50 bullfrogs in one night. The fish were caught in the river using gold fish and the frogs were gigged in the backwater canals.

Topp Martin of Tucson, Az caught a 3.75 pound bass on a pumpkin power bait worm in the Martinez Lake entrance.

Russ Wilson, Zach Grant and Jason Hobbs all of the Riverside area caught a stringer of flathead on goldfish below Pichacho while on a guided trip with Ken Goodwin.

The water level will stay high for the rest of the summer because of irrigation needs in Imperial Valley and Mexico. The water temperature is 73 degrees,  with  a few sandbars  above the surface.. The weather is in the mid 90's in the daytime and the low  60s at night.

Ken Goodwin, Martinez Lake Fishing Guide, tells us that the big mouth bass fishing is good. The bass are being caught  mostly in the   lakes  using  crawdads. shiners, spinnerbait, crankbait and plastic worms. The bass are finished spawning with lots of  fry in the water. The water is very clear in the back waters.  The catfishing is good with a few medium sized flat heads being caught at night on bluegil and goldfish (10 to 25 pounds).

The  stripers are still biting well on all types of meat, live shiners and Rapalas in the lake entrances and downstream from sand bars.  Stripers are hitting well after sunset.

The crappie, including some slabs, have been biting in Martinez Lake, the Arizona Cut and Lake Ferguson. The schools move around and the trick is to find them.The best bait are crappie shiners, yellow and white and red and white jigs.

Kelly Kissell of Westminster, Ca caught a 7 pound 6oz bigmouth while fishing for catfish at Taylor lake using cut gluegil.

Larry Chapman of El Cajon, Ca caught a limit three days running ranging from 2.5 to 5 pounds fishing  crank bait and spinners upstream from Martinez Lake in Adobe Lake, Taylor Lake and Island Lake.

Johan Sheldon 3, Sydney Johnson 5, Lexie Sheldon 8, and Jessica Sheldon 10 all caught a stringer of bluegil using mealworms at the entrance to Martinez Lake.

The water temperature is up  to 61 degrees,  with some sandbars. The weather has warmed up to the 80's in the daytime and the mid 50's at night.

Ken Goodwin, Martinez Lake Fishing Guide, tells us that the big mouth bass fishing is fair.  The bass are being caught  mostly in the   lakes  using   shiners, rattle traps,  sinkworms and jigs. There have been numerous bass fishing tournaments of late starting Wednesday and ending Sunday. The fishing pressure has been heavy.  The biggest catch in  a recent tournament was 9 pounds for a 5 fish limit.  The water is  clear in the back waters.  The catfishing is starting  to pick up with a few medium flat heads being caught on bluegil (10 to 40 pounds) Spring is on us and with days of increased temperature, fishing should pick up by the middle of March.

Mark and Vanessa Roberts of Ramona, Ca caught 25 crappie up to two pounds on crappie shiners and a 3.5 pound bass all in Martinez Lake.

Bill Robbins of Martinez Lake caught a 3.5 and 2.5 pound bass off of the docks at night using a Rattle Trap in Martinez Lake.

John Pickett of Flagstaff, Az caught and released a 20 pound limit of bass up to 5 pounds using live shiners after stricking out on crank bait. Most fish were caught in Lake Ferguson

A recent small diesel spill  of less than 2000 galloons at Cibola has had no effect on the fishing, birds or wildlife.  Cibola is 40 miles upstream from Martinez Lake. The river is reopened and the flow is normal.

Jim Castle of Santee, Ca. caught a limit of bass up to 3 pounds using a Rattletrap (shad color) after sunset off of the docks at Martinez Lake, all in less than 2 hours.
